140 Years of History. Genuine Czech Beer — in the Heart of Samarkand.
The Samarkand Brewery was founded in 1885 as the first brewery in Central Asia. It was built with the funds of entrepreneur Otto Vogau, using authentic Czech technology. Even today, when you step into the old fermentation halls, brewing rooms, and aging cellars, you can hardly tell whether you are in Samarkand, Brno, Plzeň, or Prague — the architectural details, building features, and brickwork are so identical to those found both here at our brewery and in the Czech Republic.
In 1892, a deposit of mineral water was discovered on the brewery’s grounds, and a well was drilled. For more than a century, it has supplied Uzbekistan with high-quality medicinal and table mineral water. Today you can find it on store and pharmacy shelves under the brand name “Samarqand.”
Good water is crucial to the quality and taste of beer. The exceptional quality of Samarkand’s water is shaped by the local landscape: the majestic Pamir mountain ranges surrounding the Samarkand oasis on three sides. Glacial waters feed not only the Zarafshan River and its many canals, but also enrich the groundwater of the valley.
The modern history of the brewery, Pulsar Group Brewery, began in 1995, when the plant was privatized with the participation of Czech partners. Today it is a powerful enterprise and one of the market leaders, producing beer and soft drinks under the brands Pulsar, Pragerskoe, Bochka, Zhigulevskoe, Lémonadier, Mohito, and Puls. The brewery is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery from the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands.
We are the only major brewery in Uzbekistan producing a genuine Czech Pilsner — a beer with a rich hop aroma and flavor. Tourists from the Czech Republic often admit that in blind tastings they cannot tell Pulsar apart from other Czech beers.
We use only natural hops from Germany and the Czech Republic, as well as top-quality imported malt. Our beer is brewed by combining centuries-old traditions with the latest technologies.
As the saying goes: the key ingredients in beer are malt, water, hops, and… the brewer’s conscience!
